Materials Testing
Shelby’s experienced engineering and technical staff can provide laboratory and field testing of construction materials and quality assurance/quality control (QA/QC) testing during construction on projects ranging from simple one-time visits (such as a single concrete test) to long term, complicated projects (such as the redevelopment of a historic structure).
Field Testing
- density testing of soil and granular materials
- testing of fresh and hardened concrete
- foundation installation monitoring
- subgrade assessments
- frost inspections
- rebar inspections
- asphalt and concrete coring
- Impact hammer (Schmidt hammer) testing
- Soil and groundwater sampling
- dynamic cone penetrometer (DCP) testing
- gravel crusher control
Laboratory Testing
Our laboratory is well equipped to conduct construction materials testing on soil, aggregates, asphalt, and concrete to relevant CSA, ASTM or AASHTO CCIL standards.
- Compressive and flexural strength of concrete
- Compressive strength of mortar, grout or shotcrete
- Moisture-density relationships of soils and aggregates (Standard Proctor or Modified Proctor)
- Gyratory compaction analysis of ACP samples (Superpave)
- Asphalt content determination
- visual classification of soil and aggregates
- Atterberg limit testing (plasticity testing)
- grain-size analysis (sieve analysis and hydrometer)
- Specific gravity determination
- organic content
- unconfined compressive strength
- California Bearing Ratio (CBR) determination
Specialty Testing
In addition to routine testing services, Shelby offers several more specialized testing services
- Floor Flatness Testing (to ASTM E1155)
- Relative Humidity Testing (to ASTM F2170)
- Radon Testing by Canadian National Radon Proficiency Program (C-NRPP) certified Radon Professionals for both radon measurement and radon mitigation
- Pull-off testing to determine bond strength of toppings, overlays or floor tiles
